'무서운 할로윈보다 라이트파티가 더 재밌어요'

매년 10월 31일이면 무서운 분장을 한 사람들이 파티를 열고, 호박이나 마녀 분장을 한 어린아이들이 집집마다 돌아다니며 사탕을 받기 위해 “Trick or Treat”을 외친다. 그러나 이보다 안전하고 밝은 분위기의 라이트파티(Light Party)가 매년 할로윈을 대신하여 교회 등을 통해 열리면서 많은 어린이들의 사랑을 받고 있다.

할로윈데이는 매년 10월 31일에 행해지는 행사로서 죽은 영혼이 다시 살아나며 정령이나 마녀가 출몰한다고 믿고, 그것들을 놀려주기 위해 사람들이 유령이나 마녀, 괴물 등의 복장을 하고 축제를 즐긴다. 할로윈 날에는 가정에서도 집 안팎을 유령, 마녀, 박쥐, 좀비 등과 같은 것들로 장식한다.

이렇게 부정적이고 어두운 행사에 대안하는 ‘라이트 파티(Light Party)’가 2000년부터 오클랜드에서 시작되었다. 웬디 레이드(Wendy Reid)는 청소년들을 위해 일하는 사람이자, 한 가정 주부였다. 그녀는 아이들을 생각하며 할로윈의 부정적인 면모들을 대안할 수 있는 긍정적인 행사를 기획했다. 레이드는 첫 행사를 자신의 집에서 즐겼고, 이후 이는 뉴질랜드 전역으로 퍼져 나갔다. 현재는 전 세계적으로 수많은 라이트파티가 매년 10월 31일 날 열리며 어린이들의 사랑을 받고 있다.

라이트파티는 주로 어린이들이 자신이 좋아하는 캐릭터 옷을 입고 다른 친구들 또는 가족들과 함께 게임, 액티비티 등을 즐기는 행사로, 뉴질랜드 전역에서 열리고 있다. 맛있는 먹거리도 준비되어 있다.

할로윈은 원래 켈트족이 10월 31일을 여름의 끝으로, 11월 1일을 겨울의 시작으로 보고 새 해의 첫 날로 기념하던 것을 가져온 풍습이다. 당시 사람들은 태양의 힘이 약해져 산 자와 죽은 자의 경계가 불분명해진다고 믿었으며 온갖 정령이나 마녀가 나올 뿐 아니라 죽은 사람들의 혼령이 다시 땅으로 내려와 농사를 망치게 하고 사고를 일으키며 또 살아있는 사람들의 몸을 빌려 거처를 마련한다고 믿었다. 이러한 생각과 풍습이 기원 후 1세기경 로마인에 의해 받아들여졌고 이 풍습이 세월이 흐르면서 점차 변해 도깨비, 귀신, 마녀와 같은 복장을 하고 모이는 축제 형식으로 발전되었다.
